SEND ME THE INVITEMy XJW Story
I grew up in the Jehovah’s Witnesses and was disfellowshipped nearly 32 years ago. At the time, I thought walking away would mean freedom overnight. What I didn’t realize was how deeply the teachings, rules, and culture had shaped me. Leaving was only the beginning of a long healing journey.
For years I carried shame, self-doubt, and the fear that I would never fully belong in the world. It took years of learning, unlearning, and slowly rebuilding to trust myself again, to reclaim my inner authority, and to create a life that felt true to who I am.
Today, my life is filled with meaning and purpose. I have deep, loving relationships, a beautiful connection with myself, and the freedom to follow my dreams. The journey has not been simple or linear, but it has been *so* worth it.
If you are on this path, please know you are not alone. Healing does happen. Community is real beyond the confines of Jehovah's Witnesses. Joy and peace are within reach.
That’s why I created the XJW Recovery Group-- a space for us to walk this road together.
FAQ
I’m not a Jehovah’s Witness. Can I join?
No, this group is specifically for ex-JWs. There is a unique language and culture within the JW experience, and this space is designed for those who have lived it. If you are working on healing religious trauma in general, please explore The Haven, which is open to all backgrounds.
I haven’t left the Jehovah’s Witnesses yet, but I’m planning my exit. Can I join?
Yes. Many find it supportive to connect with others who are already outside the organization. This group can help you prepare for the journey ahead and give you a sense of community during the transition.
What’s the difference between the XJW Recovery Group and The Haven?
The XJW Recovery Group is my way of giving back to my brothers and sisters who are still finding their way after leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses. It’s a supportive monthly space specifically for ex-JWs to share stories, connect, and heal together. The Haven, on the other hand, goes deeper into somatic and energy healing, introspection work, and mindfulness techniques to support anyone healing from high-control religous groups, not just former JWs.
I have other questions. Who can I ask?
